All TN districts to come under ESI Act soon

We will soon ensure that the entire state is covered under the Act,” said PB Mani, Regional Director, ESI Corporation, Chennai.
Social insurance
The Act envisages an integrated, need-based social insurance scheme to protect the interests of workers in contingencies such as sickness, maternity, temporary or permanent physical disablement and death.
It also guarantees medical care to workers and dependants.
Till now, the Act was implemented partially in industrial places with minimum of 3,000 workers. The Centre has decided to implement the Act in all districts irrespective of the number of industrial employees.

For example, the Act was implemented in Vellore district only in Ambur where there are nearly 3,000 workers.

Now the entire district, as also all other districts, will be covered under the Act. Shortly, a notification will be issued in this regard, Mani said at an interactive session organised by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Talks with govt
The Corporation is holding discussions with the Tamil Nadu government, which has to make the medical arrangements in districts, he said.

In Tamil Nadu, ESI has ten hospitals, two run by the corporation and eight by the state government, for which the corporation provides the funding, he said.

Mani urged employers and companies to bring as many employees as possible into ambit of the Act.

Enrolment drive
In a bid to extend Social Security cover of ESI Scheme to the entire country, ESI Corporation announced a scheme of a one-time opportunity to encourage employers to register themselves and their employees, including contractual, casual and temporary.
The scheme is open from January 1 to March, 31. “We will not ask any question to employers regarding registration.

The scheme will not have any bearing on actions taken/required under ESI Act, if any, prior to January 1, 2017,” he said.
